Why I built BasicPlate

I built the tracker I couldn't find.

For me, tracking my nutrition was never about hitting a perfect number. It was about paying attention.

What I wanted was to be mindful of what I ate, even on the days that weren't pretty, so I always knew where I stood and could adjust as I went. Not track hard for a week, quit for a month, and repeat. Real awareness, consistently. That's the thing that actually changes how we eat over time. Hitting my goals mattered, but to me, staying aware mattered more.

No app let me do that, because every one of them got in the way:

The interfaces were clunky, slow, and bloated. Logging pulled from crowdsourced databases full of noise, so I'd hunt through near-matches for one ingredient at a time and still not trust the result. Building a reusable recipe took too long and broke the moment I wanted to change something. The AI apps promised the world from a single photo and came back wildly inconsistent while voice input misheard what I'd said. Anywhere without a menu or nutrition information like a family restaurant, a stadium, or any other venue and I was simply out of luck. Skip the meal in my log, call the day a wash, and hope for a better tomorrow.

So I'd quit within a week. Every single time.

I've seen what good products can be, because I've spent my career building them for other companies. I knew better was possible, and honestly I was in disbelief that these apps still couldn't get it right. So I built this one for myself, the product I always wanted, and something I could share with everyone else who was burned out playing the same game I was.

None of it is novel. It just follows the principles I think every product should: keep it simple, fast, accurate, and free of friction. Do the job, then get out of the way.

BasicPlate combines a photo, your voice, and a quick note into a single entry, so it reasons over everything you actually know about your meal instead of guessing from a picture. A single piece of fruit? Easy. A messy, vague, no-label plate at a restaurant or a theme park? That's exactly what it's for. Fast, accurate, and honest even on the messy days, because those days count too.

I kept believing something better was out there. So I built it myself.

My promise to you.

I'll always keep you and the product first.

I won't add a feature just to have one. Everything that ships earns its place, which means you might not see something new very often. But when you do, it'll be exactly what you'd hoped for: reliable, useful, and worth the wait.

Simple, done well. Nothing more.
